Slideshow: Pablo Ziegler Meets Berklee

The Signature Series at Berklee welcomed Pablo Ziegler, a Latin Grammy Award-winning pianist, composer, and arranger from Argentina, to the Berklee Performance Center stage, Thursday, November 10. The concert featured 60 students, who played in the orchestra, sang, and arranged performances of Ziegler’s compositions and arrangements.

Ziegler is known for his vibrant musical hybrid of classic tango and American jazz, a style called Argentine new tango. The first half of the concert showcased Berklee students performing new arrangements of tangos in contemporary styles, and the second half of the concert featured Ziegler’s JazzTango Trio, including guest performer Héctor Del Curto on bandoneón and Claudio Ragazzi, associate professor of film scoring, on guitar.

The concert was produced by Oscar Stagnaro, professor of bass, with Nando Michelin, associate professor of piano, as musical director, and Tsunenori "Lee" Abe, assistant professor of contemporary writing and production, as vocal coordinator. Abe composed a new vocal arrangement of the well-known tango “La Cumparsita,” which was performed by the 10-piece a cappella group Boston Aires 10, and students composed new, contemporized arrangements of other tangos such as “El Dia Que Me Quieras/Volver Medley,” arranged by Shereen Cheong, “Milonga Sentimental,” arranged by Tomas Kaco, and “Flor de Lino” arranged by Isaac Matus.
